Rock Patel Vintage 1992

I’m going old school and reviewing a cigar that has been with me since the beginning. I’ve had this cigar in my humidor for at least two years. Rocky Patel helped me move on from beginner cigars such as the Macanudo Vintages. I was surprised that I haven’t reviewed this yet.

I paired tonight’s cigar with a touch of The Glenlivet Single Malt Scotch, and filtered, room temperature Florida tap water.

Details:

Ecuadorian wrapper that has been aged 10 years combined with a 5 year old filler and binder.

Size: Toro 6 1/2 x 50

Pre Smoke -
The wrapper looked very nice, with little defects or veins. The original box shape has since rounded out from sitting in my humidor. This may account for the slight spongy feeling when squeezed.

First Third:
Staying in the medium body range, things started off with nice creamy, earthy taste. The draw had no resistance, but didn’t burn hot or fast. For the most part, rich, soil like notes (IE earthy) were prominent. The burn was perfect and straight.

Second Third:
This is a complaint I’ve always had about the RP Vintage lines… The cap just wants to lift off of the cigar. I’ve heard others complain of this issue as well. On queue, when the 2nd third began, part of the cap started to lift. I was able to wet and re-apply the lifted part. As for flavor… The earthy flavor remained, but a nice woody flavor crept in. For a couple of puffs, I had a distinct coco-ish flavor, but it went away as quickly as it came. The burn was great, only getting a little wavy. Body still remained well in the medium range.

Last Third:
The body crept into the upper medium range. The earthiness took a back seat, and a woody, nutty flavor came to the forefront. This remained until I put the cigar down.

Conclusion:
I enjoyed this cigar. I would recommend at least trying it and seeing if it’s for you. It isn’t the most complex cigar, but the flavor profile kept my interest. As always, here is the amazing slide show.
