Oliva Serie V Maduro Especial

After attending the Oliva event at Ed’s shop, I thought it was time to review the Serie V Maduro. As always, I’m pairing the cigar with water, and a few sips of The Balvenie 17 year single malt scotch.

On to the cigar…

Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Jalapa Valley Ligero
Size: 6 X 52
Price: Around 8 or $9.00

Pre-Smoke:
The construction was great. With minimal veins, the wrapper looked shiny and smelled great. The cap has a slight knot, which caused a tight draw. With a little massage, and some work with the poker, the draw was fine.

First Third:
In the full body range, I was hit with strong pepper and spices right from the start. Towards the end of this third, the taste evolved with notes of wood and occasional, very slight coco. Very nice…

Second Third:
A smooth, pepper and spice remained throughout this third. Woody notes dominated, and mixed well with the other flavors. I’d venture to say a nutty flavor crept and remained in the background.

Last Third:
Wood was the dominant flavor, and mixed well with the smooth spice and pepper. Coco and slight coffee notes were in the background as well. The smoke was smooth and well in to the full bodied range.

Conclusion:
During the first third, I had some burn problems, but they went away in the last two thirds. The ash held on for over an inch before falling off. Overall, I enjoyed this cigar. If you enjoy, or are thinking about trying a full bodied smoke, I would recommend the Oliva Serie V Maduro Especial.
