Camacho Liberty 2008

I used the new year as an excuse to smoke a Camacho Liberty 2008. Due to it’s $15.00 price tag, I didn’t get a chance to smoke more of these before the review.

The Camacho Liberty 08 blend apparently is being kept secret. I suspect, like last years release, there is a pinch of pre-embargo Cuban tobacco involved. As always, each cigar is stored in a hand screened, numbered coffin. I have cigar number 19,623 out of 40,000. Tonight I’m pairing this cigar with a touch of Glenlivet 12 year scotch, and water. I really enjoyed the 07 Liberty to the point of buying a box. Let’s see how the 08 rates.

Wrapper: Maduro & Corojo
Binder/Filler: Ultra secret
Size: 6 X 56
Price: Around $15.00

Pre-smoke and construction:
The double wrap looked great, with minimal flaws. I found no soft spots, and it seemed to be well constructed. Sniffing the foot and wrapper, I could only find the distinct aroma of ceder. The draw was perfect, and the pre-light draw had notes of ceder as well. The ash held on for an inch before falling off, and the burn line required a couple touch ups during each third.

The first third began in the medium body range, and had smooth pepper and earthy notes. To clarify, when I say earthy, I an referring to a rich soil or grassy note. There really wasn’t much more to it then that.

The second third continued with earth and pepper. A nice woody flavor came in, and the body increased in to the upper medium range.

The last third kept the same flavors as the second, with an addition of coffee. The body moved up in to the full range as well.

Conclusion:
I did enjoy smoking the 08 Liberty, but I seem to recall liking the 07 a bit more. The flavor profile of this cigar was fairly simple, but it held my interest. The packaging and presentation was nice, but for $15.00, I was expecting more of a “Wow” factor in terms of flavor. The bottom line is, this was a good cigar. As I often say, I would have to suggest you try it and be the judge.

And now, the amazing slide show…

In a way I was a little dissapointed in the 08. I guess I keep comparing it to the 07, which I love.

I’m not sure about the Centurion. I’ve had a lot of Gurkha’s though. All of them have been nice. No matter how much I want to hate them, they are good cigars.

I’ll keep my eye out for em.
