Aquarius

Anyone who has watched or read Ed/my reviews knows I really enjoy a Brazilian puro. There is a unique taste that I can never quite pin down. In late 2007, Ed was having a Dona Flor cigar event. Dana from Dona Flor gave me around 10 cigars. The handful consisted of Dona Flor, Alonzo Menendez, and Aquarius cigars. All three brands consist of tobaccos from Brazil.

While rummaging through my humidor, I came across tonight’s cigar. I’ve had it since October 17th, 2007. How do I know? I dated the cigar with a blank band. That’s the way I roll. I figured it was time to review it. As I often do, I am pairing up with water and a few sips of The Glenlivet 12 year scotch.

Wrapper: Brazil-Sungrown Mata Fina

Binder/Filler: Brazil

Size: 5 x 52 (robusto)

Price: Around $5.00

Construction / Presmoke:

The wrapper was dark and rugged looking (Toothy). It had a few large veins running throughout. As I held it to a light, I noticed glistening specs of plume. The triple cap looked nice, but was lifting on one side. When sniffing the wrapper and foot, it basically smelled like my humidor – cedar. The pre-light draw was a sweet, woody flavor. The draw was a little tight, but well within my tolerance. The ash held on for around an inch, and despite flowering quite a bit, never fell off without tapping against the ashtray.

Flavor:

The first third immediately started off with woody notes, combined with sweet, somewhat nutty flavors. I’ll probably say this comment often in this review… There was something more to the flavor profile. I get this taste whenever smoke a Brazilian puro.

The second third added a smooth, somewhat creamy mocha flavor. The nutty and woody notes took a back seat to a small degree. These flavors melded together with that unique tobacco taste that only Brazil can produce.

Mocha and sweet notes increased quite a bit. The smoke became very thick and coated the mouth. The sweet aftertaste was pleasant. Woody and nutty flavors still remained in the background, yet were very noticeable, if that makes sense.

Conclusion:

As I expected, this was a very good cigar. I tried to be as accurate as possible in describing the flavors, but there is something unique that you’d have to experience for yourself. My review doesn’t quite do it justice. If you ever run across the Aquarius, Alonzo Menendez, or Dona Flor lines, I strongly suggest you pick a few up.

I strongly suggest anyone to pick up some Alonzo Menedez cigars. They are excellent, pure gems.
One of my favorite cigars right now . . .

Hey Tom, Thanks for the review. I’ve seem to be getting into Brazilian smokes lately, and did a quick search for these, but didn’t come up with much. Do you know where these can be had? Thank you sir.

Phil – Good question, I can’t find them online anywhere. You may have more luck finding Dona Flor or Alonzo Menendez (same company). I only know of one local place who has them here, which is Ed’s shop.
