CONTEST! Don Ramon Connecticut

1DonRamonConnNot long ago, Andrew Roth from The H.J. Bailey Company contacted me about reviewing their house blend, The Don Ramon. Naturally, I accepted the challenge. Shortly after speaking with Andrew, a bunch of cigars ended up at my door. This is part one of a two part contest. Entering is easy, continue reading and you’ll see.

The Don Ramon line was blended exclusively for the H.J. Bailey Company by Camacho. This line of cigars commemorates Raymond D. Roth, who passed away in 1998.

As always, I am pairing up with water. On to the review…

Size: 5 x 50
Wrapper: Connecticut
Binder/Filler: Honduran
Price: $6.50 a stick, $75.75 box of 25

Pre-Smoke/Construction:

Overall, the cigar was constructed well. When squeezing, there were a few soft spots. The wrapper looked decent, with a few veins and minimal cosmetic flaws. There was a suspicious spot near the foot, but it was likely a water stain. When sniffing the wrapper and foot, I was reminded of cedar. The pre-light draw was free, and tasted like cedar and soil. The burn required no touch ups, and burned straight the whole time. The ash held on for over an inch, and never fell off in my lap.

3DonRamonConn

Flavor:

The first third opened up with a pleasant, simple earthy flavor. Around an inch in, buttery notes joined with the earthy/grassiness. Although simple, it was smooth and enjoyable.

4DonRamonConn

In the second third, the buttery flavors increased slightly. The earthy notes calmed down but remained present. The smoke took on a smooth, creamy feel to it.

5DonRamonConn

A somewhat toasty, buttery flavor, combined with nuts dominated this third. A very mild spice was noticed when passing through the sinus, and maybe a hint of coffee.

6DonRamonConn

Conclusion:

This was a decent mild cigar. Admittedly, the flavor profile was common to many Connecticut cigars, but I found it enjoyable. I think this cigar would go well with some morning coffee.

Rocky February 27th, 2009 at 3:52 pm

Great review Tom! These do sound like a great morning with coffee smoke.

A mild Camacho blend? What’s the world coming to…

“Buttery” is one of those cigar flavors that I don’t think about a lot, but I usually like it. I always thought the Puros Indios in the natural wrapper had a buttery flavor, but I haven’t had one of those in years.

Great review as usual. I have not tried these yet, but it sounds like I would certainly enjoy them. I had a Butera Royal Vintage two weeks back which was a great mild cigar….I’d love to try the Don Ramon!

These cigars really look interesting. Great review as usual Tom. After originally seeing your reviews with Ed on the Stogie Review I stumbled upon this site; now I look forward to new posts here more than any other cigar blog out there… OK maybe not when it’s Jerrys day to post on the SR; but your a close second :)

Buttery nuts. That’s all me. Thanks for the review.

Erik Fraunfelter February 28th, 2009 at 1:09 pm

Great review. This cigar sounds very similar to the Rocky Patel Vintage 1999 Connecticut, or one of personal favorites, the Cusano Paired 18 Connecticut. I’ve been seeing a recurring theme with Connecticut wrapped cigars that they all have a smooth, creamy, buttery, taste with flavors of earth and hay. I very much like that in a mild cigar. Personally my favorite body type in cigars is between medium and full, but there is nothing wrong with a mild cigar like the Don Ramon Connecticut at all! This cigar sounds like it would be great in the morning if you are the kind of person that likes a cigar in the morning. For me, this cigar would most likely be good for times where I just want something light to go with coffee, or for times where I don’t anything to heavy. Thanks for the contest and I hope I am selected to win the box!

Tom,

This cigar sounds tasty. Love to try it. Did you find any creaminess with it?

Rich March 4th, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Always enjoy your reviews Tom. It sounds like a real nice morning smoke with a cup of coffee. That creamy buttery, creamy flavor description has always intrigued me but I have yet to experience it and yes I would love to win them.
I look forward to your next review with Ed also. You guys have a great dialogue that adds to the reviews.
Keep on Puffin’!
