Oliveros King Havano

Up for review tonight is the Oliveros King Havano. The first thing that I thought when I saw this cigar is obvious… “This is a Nub rip-off, I have to try this cigar.” I picked up a few and headed home to smoke. Oliveros touts this as a full bodied cigar. When I learned of the blend, I was intrigued, so lets get to the review!

Wrapper: Oscuro

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler:Nicaraguan Ligero from Esteli

Size: 4 x 60

Price: Around $4.00

Pre-Smoke & Construction:

When looking at the wrapper, I appreciated its appearance. The wrapper was smooth with a few bumps here and there. The wrapper smelled sweet, and the foot had sweet spicy notes. The draw was perfect, and the pre-light draw tasted sweet. When squeezing the cigar, there were no soft spots. The burn only required a few touch-ups, and the ash held firm for around an inch.

Flavor:

A sweet coffeeish flavor kicked off the first third. I detected earthy notes way in the background. The smoke was very smooth, with a slight spice when passing through the nose.

A slight woody taste, combined with mocha and coffee pretty much dominated the flavor profile. To stop there wouldn’t do this third justice. A very nice sweet spice lingered, and the mocha would intensify and fall back from time to time.

The last third had a prominent coffee flavor. The sweet flavors lingered and melded with woody notes. The mocha taste almost went away, and I noticed earthy notes a little more. There was more going on in terms of the flavor profile, but I think my pallet isn’t advanced enough to detect it.

Conclusion:

Despite being a pretty fresh cigar, it went well. I thought it would be an easy review, but as it progressed, I found myself having problems picking up on all the flavors. The only justice I can give this review is suggesting you give it a try. This is a nice full bodied cigar indeed.

Very nice review. I keep staring at these in the B&M and haven’t pulled the trigger yet because of my poor history with other Oliveros. Have you had any of their other lines and how did this one compare?

Nice review. I am a little surprised by this review. Usually when there is a “knock off” of just about anything it sucks. Pretty cool that this turned out to be a nice smoke. I wonder how the Nub Maduro will compare after it’s release in April?

MountChuck-I tried the LTD awhile back and thought it was good. I think this one was better though.

Homebrewer- The whole Nub knockoff thing is what really got my attention. As I often do, I wanted to think “Bah the Nub is the original, and is better!” But this smoke does deliver. I’m going to try some of the other sizes as well.

I also look forward to trying the new Nubs since I am a fan.

T-man,

I really like this cigar and the brand in general is extremely underrated. Oliveros is doing some good things and should be taken seriously.

Just my humble-ass little opinion.

I ended up grabbing one at my local cigar shop here in fort lauderdale. I was excited to go home and take a rip of this extremely attractive cigar. I noticed a oily fresh looking wrapper with veins that bulged out. I experienced the same flavors you did! I was amazed with the many flavors, including a cocoa flavor- I did find it very, very, veryy hot to smoke when it got shorter- This makes this cigar not last as long as I would like it to. THe next day I drove to the cigar shop and grabbed 5. I have smoked 3 out of the 5 and it is one of the most consistant cigars I have smoked on the market lately- Peace out

Dave – Cool it’s always good for a second opinion. I’m glad the review was spot on. Definitely a good cigar.

I gotta tell you, this and the King Havano are a damn good “Bang for the Buck”,especially the “King. These cigars are advertized as Medium smokes, but I must say the flavor is nice full, and rich.

I smoke the larger king havano’s, and it has become one of my favorite cigars, I find myself buying regularly. For the price, it’s hard to beat it’s rich consistent flavors and ease of draw. What I enjoy most about this cigar is how it tastes great through the entire smoke. While it’s flavor changes as you smoke it, like all cigars, it doesn’t turn into a nasty flavor, stays tasteful through the whole burn.

i just finished my 1st Oliveros King Havano 4×60. i totally enjoyed it, and will try it again! i concur with most of your review, but the one i had was more of a medium body. my complaint was that i smoked it outside in Wisconsin on a beautiful February Sunday afternoon (temperature 30 degrees)and i had trouble keeping it lit. it probably had something to do with temperature, or that i was scraping snow off of the driveway while smoking, but otherwise it was a good cigar. thanks for the review.
