J. Fuego Delirium

This cigar was given to me from my good friend Ed over at St. Pete Pipe & Cigars. For the record, this is the first time I’ve smoked this cigar. Ed tried one and wasn’t enthused, so he handed one to me to see what I thought. As always, I am pairing up with Florida tap water that is PUR filtered.

Wrapper: Brazilian Maduro

Binder: Costa Rican Corojo

Filler: Honduras and Nicaragua

Size: Corona 5.5 x 46

Price: Around $5.00

1JFuego

Pre-smoke & Construction:

The dark maduro wrapper looked very nice, with a couple large veins running though it. The cigar was very firmly packed, and the pre-light draw was a little stiff (but not bad). When sniffing the foot and wrapper, I was reminded of hay or grass. Taking a draw through the unlit cigar had the same taste. Overall, the construction and pre-smoke inspection went well. The burn required a few corrections, and the ash was tight and held on for an inch or so.

Flavor:

The first third had a somewhat slow start. Initially I was greeted with an unknown sweet flavor. About 1/2 inch in, I detected faint cocoa and an even more faint earthy taste. There was a definite sweet spice when passing through the sinus. I was left with a parched feeling that left me craving water.

As I got into the second third, a cocoa flavor increased quite a bit. One draw would be pure cocoa,  and the other would have almost none. The sweet spice was still present, and the earthy notes I had before were almost gone.

3JFuego

The mocha/cocoa flavors pretty much dominated the last third, until… With about two inches left of the cigar, the flavor fell flat. The cocoa was hard to detect, and a harsh sensation took over.

Conclusion:

For the most part, I liked the cigar, until the last third went bad. I didn’t mind the cotton mouth too much, but the harshness in the last third forced me to put this stick down. Since this was the only time I’ve smoked this cigar, I have to base my opinion on it alone. I have to give it a thumbs down.

Another nice review Tom. I was thinking about trying this cigar out as my local just picked them up. So far I have yet to try one of the J. Fuego line although I do love the Xikar defiance that he blened so hopefully this will be good as well.

P.S. I really meant to leave some hate mail on here so you wouldn’t feel left out but I totally forgot :) Maybe next time

I want to try the defiance as well. That was another cigar that Ed did not like. But considering the good things I’ve heard about it, I figure it’s at least worth a try.

Hi Tom. Nice work on this site. This is not hate mail (sorry!), but I do have to disagree. I really like this cigar. To me it tastes like a rich dark chocolate with spices. IMO, it’s not a traditional cigar taste (wood, nuts, hay, spices, coffee, cocoa, etc.), sort of its own thing that leans very heavily on the cocoa-like notes. I guess in that sense, it’s unbalanced, though it’s my favorite of Fuego’s lines. The 777 is another oddball worth trying if you’d like to try something different. Think earth, putty, and linseed oil – very heavy flavors. It’s odd. I’m a little bored by the other two in his stable.

The Defiance, though, is a great smoke as well. It’s more what I think of as a traditional tasting cigar, if that makes any sense. He also blended Patel’s 1990, 1992, and I think had a hand in the OWR.

BTW, thought it was always Fiji water? I use the PUR myself and love it.

The Defiance is a good solid cigar – very tasty with hints of caramel (at least that is what I picked up)
I always pick up a few when in the local shop.

Robert – This is rediculous. I start a blog expecting hate mail and have had none (that was heart felt anyway). Don’t come back here until you have something negative to say ;-)
I have a 777 in the humidor that I’ll review very soon. Never had one, so I hope I like it. Still have yet to get a Defiance though.

I do Fuji when I’m not at home. Otherwise, it’s cheaper to go the PUR route.

CWS – As soon as I see some around here, I’ll pick a few up for review. Ed didn’t like them, but that makes me want to try it even more.

Hi Guys! Thanks for the nice comments Defiance! Watch for some upcoming news on Defiance … more good stuff from the combination of XIKAR and J. Fuego! If it is appropriate and acceptable to this group (don’t want to be caught “selling”)send me your email addresses and mail address and I will put you on the list to taste some of our new cigars coming out in May … but can’t tell you the name yet! Keep smoking!! Jerry Dear, EXP Sales & Marketing, Tobacco for XIKAR.

Jerry – I still haven’t had a chance to try the Defiance. I am keeping an eye out for them though. I’ve heard great and bad reviews alike, so I want to judge for myself.
I may have to take you up on that offer for the smokes though!

Tom, no hate mail here either. Sorry. I am currently in Afghanistan and just totay got my small box of J Fuego Deliriums. Although i have smoked this cigar before, I was on the golf course and want really focused on the taste as I am now. I agree with the Hint of Cocoa and disagree with the last third harshness. I enjoyed the whole cigar and have tried to let other enjoy them too. Great Site! Great Smoke. Talk again soon. dave
