Rocky Patel Nording

Nording[1] It seems Duque Cigars had a few smokes in mind for me to review. I say this because another grab bag of cigars recently arrived in the mail. Naturally I obliged, and pulled out the Rocky Patel Nording. The only background info I could get is that the Nording was blended for the famous European pipe maker, Erik Nording. I’ve read conflicting information on the web concerning the blend, so I’ll go with what I found on rockypatel.com. Also, see what Jerry thought of this cigar over at The Stogie Review. As always, I am pairing up with water for this review…

Wrapper: Nicaraguan Colorado

Binder: Nicaragua

Filler: Nicaragua & Dominican

Size: Robusto 5.5 x 52

Price: $5 to $6.00

Pre-smoke & Construction:

The first thing I noticed was the pigtail end, which looked great. The cigar itself was firmly packed, with no soft spots. The wrapper looked a little bumpy with minimal veins, and smelled of hay/grass and wood. Sniffing the foot reminded me of pepper. The pre-light draw was free, and had a sweet, woody taste. The burn required a few touchups, but everything evened out in the last third. The ash held firm for around an inch. Construction overall was good.

Flavor:

The first third started off with tons of thick smoke. The actual feel of the smoke can only be described at thick. It became somewhat creamy as well. To finish things up, there were very smooth peppery notes. Simple and nice so far…

The second third continued with that thick feeling smoke. Either my palate just woke up, or hints of coffee came into the picture. Shortly after that, I noticed fairly strong nutty flavors. When retrohaling I still got those smooth peppery notes. Things really came together in this third.

For the last third, nutty flavors seemed to be the dominant flavor. The coffee flavors were pretty strong as well. The smoke took on a more smooth texture, and I detected woody notes as well. I noticed a somewhat sweet taste that I couldn’t quite pin down. It was a sweet and somewhat spicy.

Conclusion:

It has been quite some time since I’ve had a Nording. After doing this review, I couldn’t help but wonder… “Why don’t I have more of these cigars in my humidor?” Sure, this wasn’t an amazing “WOW” cigar, but it was damn good medium to full bodied smoke.  Do yourself a favor and try the Nording by Rocky Patel.

Tom,

Great review as usual! I have seen these online and always wondered how they were. I’m glad you reviewed this one and I’ll be sure to see what Jerry @ Stogie Review had to say about them as well.

Thanks again!

Nice review as usual buddy, can’t wait for the next! I know that the PSP #2 is your favorite ISOM, got a box from JUN 06… I agree these things are sublime! Best I’ve tasted.
