Rocky Patel Connecticut

What’s up with all the Rocky Patel reviews lately, you ask? It is just a phase. I am a long time fan boy of Rocky. This morning I was rummaging around the humidor, looking for a mild cigar to have with coffee. The Rocky Patel Connecticut caught my attention. I purchased some of these sticks a couple years ago and smoked through most of them. The cigar up for review has been in my humidor for at least two years. Since this was my staple morning smoke for awhile, I am pairing it with coffee and a little water. Let’s get to the review!

Wrapper: Connecticut

Binder/Filler: It was hard to get info on the exact blend. I believe it is Honduran.

Size: Churchill 7 x 47

Price: $27.00 for a five pack

Pre-smoke & Construction:

Squeezing the cigar showed no soft spots, and it was pretty firm. Despite this, the draw felt very free. The pre-light draw tasted like cedar, and sniffing the wrapper and foot had the same smell. Looking over the wrapper, I noticed it was somewhat veiny but overall looked fine. The burn was perfect, requiring no touchups. The ash held on for over an inch before falling off. Construction was great overall.

Flavor:

The first third had very mild earthy notes. On top of that were woody flavors. As the first third came to a close, the smoke became smooth and somewhat buttery.

The second third continued that buttery, toasty flavor. It became nutty as I progressed. The earthy and woody undertones I had in the first third were gone. Simple but good so far.

For the last third, the smoke became very creamy. The flavors were easy… Buttery, toasty, and nutty. Simple, one dimensional, but enjoyable.

Conclusion:

This is a good, simple, mild cigar. Those of you who seek a “Wow” cigar will find this smoke boring. But if you appreciate mild Connecticut wrapped cigars, you may want to give this cigar a try. This smoke can hold its own against a $15.00 Macanudo Vintage for a fraction of the price. Pick some of these up, get some coffee, and enjoy.

Tom,

Great review! I’m gonna have to give these a try. I notice that it is in the morning that I usually have the most time to enjoy a cigar, so I’ll have to beef up my supply of morning mild smokes. I realized most of what I have on hand tend to be fuller bodied, which doesn’t really go well first thing in the morning.

What are your favorite cigars to enjoy in the morning?

Beezer- for awhile I didn’t care what I smoked in the morning, but I’m starting to like milder Conn wrapped cigars lately early in the day. Some of my favorites are the Nub Connecticut, Por Larranaga, and RP Connecticut.

Aaron – Haven’t tried the Oliva yet, but will as soon as possible. If I had to choose between the RP and Cuban grade, I’d go with the Por Larranaga Cuban Grade.

This cigar is great. Mild, even, not harsh, very satisfying. Have tried more expensive, less expensive, you name it, but always come back to these fantastic smokes. Put a Montecristo White Label on this and you’d never know. Believe me.

Tom nice review. I too really enjoyed the first two thirds of the cigar. Everything you said was there I experience also. Mild, yet some flavor increase at the halfway point. It left me wanting more tooth and richness from the wrapper. I guess I like the character of more robust full body smokes. The finish was so clean it left me wanting more on the palett.
