Guest Review – Don Pepin Garcia Cuban Classic

This review is courtesy of Jeremiah. See what he thought of the Don Pepin Garcia Cuban Classic:

DON PEPIN GARCIA CUBAN CLASSIC – The Don Pepin Garcia Black Label Cuban Classic is a very smooth medium to full-bodied cigar. It is one of the cheaper smokes in the Don Pepin line and is made in their Esteli Nicaragua factory.

Wrapper: Habano Rosado

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

Size: 5.0” X 50

Price: $5.00

FIRST THIRD:

The cigar was very well constructed and had a nice appearance. There was a nice buttery aroma on the pre light sniff and despite the firmness of the cigar, the draw was very loose and allowed the smoke to flow plentifully. The initial flavor was a slight walnut with a background of buttery creaminess. Toward the middle of the first third, I picked up a slight note of spice. The spice left a nice flavor on the lips after each puff.

SECOND THIRD:

The nut and creaminess remained but lightened up a bit after the first third. The spice did not last long and at the middle of the second third, the flavor seemed uneventful. However, the smoothness of the smoke did relax me. A black pepper flavor became noticeable at the end of the second third and was a nice touch after thinking things were taking a turn for the worst.

FINAL THIRD:

The burn was going very well and I was getting very large amounts of smoke. This had my palate feeling full after each puff. I was having bottled water with the cigar and needed to sip after a few puffs to clean it up. The buttery nut flavor lasted for the entire cigar. I hit spots of slight pepper and spice with a creamy undertone, which kept me interested. Toward the middle of the last third, I picked up a very slight cocoa taste, which only lasted for a minute or so.

CONCLUSION:

This was a nice relaxing afternoon smoke. I have always enjoyed the Cuban Classic and do recommend that you try it. All of the others that I have smoked were more flavorful than the one that I smoked while writing this review. I am just assuming that this is just a fluke. Let me know your thoughts on it.

Never tried one of these, but they sound good.

With all due repsect to each individual taste and cigar selection, I have had mixed experiences with this cigar – very inconsistent. Too many other good cigars out there . . .

As always – thanks for the review.

Nice review Tom, I love these smokes. Did you notice any flavor difference between the old (block printed Don Pepin Garcia on the band) and the new (the one you reviewed with the DPG in script)cigars?

No Diffrence except I remember the older ones being alittle nuttier in flavor. But, they are still good as always. J

I’ve been smoking these cigars for over a year now. I also smoke several other brands that are more expensive and much more expensive. I think the Toro DPG Black Label is a real sleeper. A very excellant cigar at an incredible price. That’s why I classify it as a “sleeper”. There are a few more jewels in the rough out there as well. I find that the longer they stay in the humi the better they get. A year is good if you can wait that long. Btw, I thought the review was very, very good! Keep em coming.

I stumbled onto these by accident (making a purchase of more expensive smokes and took these as the daily special for free shipping) – what a lucky accident that was! I’ve tried many better rated and more expensive cigars but I keep coming back to the Cuban Classic as my favorite. Even compared to all the other great Pepin blends the CC is still the most interesting – not quite as “refined” but neither am I.
