Perdomo Fresco (Maduro)

Don’t be fooled with all this talk of the recession being over. One in ten people are unemployed, and some people are getting excited about the stock market reaching levels it saw TEN YEARS AGO. America… I’m not an alarmist. I’m just saying a new “Normal” is taking shape in the ol US of A. Many of us are pinching pennies “Just incase.” This brings me to today’s review. It is a bundled, long filler value cigar. I am looking for a good smoke that is cheap, but still isn’t like those nasty cigars my Grandfather smoked back in the day. Will the Perdomo Fresco Maduro fit the bill? I grabbed a glass of water and found out…

Wrapper: Maduro

Binder: Jalapa Valley

Filler: Esteli

Size: Robusto 5 x 50

Price: Around $2.00

Overall the wrapper looked good, with minimal veins. Sniffing it reminded me of rich soil, and the foot had almost no odor. The cigar was packed fairly hard, and the pre-light draw had slight resistance. Doing a dry puff had almost no taste, basically natural tobacco.

The burn required only a couple minor touch-ups, and the ash held for about an inch.

Flavor:

The first third opened up with simple, subtle, sweet earthy notes. I say “Notes” because the flavors didn’t stand out, they were subtle. Hints of woodiness lingered along with a slight sweet spice. The smoke feel was smooth and dry.

Woody flavors took the main stage in the second third. Some draws had fairly strong woody flavors, while other draws didn’t. The earthy notes lingered far in the background, and I found sweet woody spice when exhaling through the nose. The smoke feel remained dry and smooth, and there was plenty of smoke.

As expected, the last third didn’t offer a lot of change. Sweet woodiness dominated the flavor profile. The earthy notes remained far in the background, and I still got a slight sweet spice when retro-haling. The smoke feel didn’t change and remained dry. I still enjoyed the plumes of smoke that poured off of this thing.

Conclusion:

This was a pretty good medium bodied cigar. I think you easily get your moneys worth, and then some. I can see this being a good smoke any time of the day. I can’t say I was Wowed by the flavors, but for the price, it lived up to what I was expecting. I say give this a try for a decent value cigar.

I have always wondered about that cigar. While I like buying premium and sometimes ultra premium cigars I am sometimes annoyed at the current trend to make ever more exclusive cigars, and thus more expensive. Thanks again for the review.

As usual, great review. I’m right there with you in regards to the economy. Government and the media are pulling a fast one on us.

I’ve seen these in my B&M but never really thought of picking some up. Sounds like a decent med bodied smoke and at around $2 a stick I’ll probably give them a try.
Thanks for the review Tom.

I’ve been budgeting my self on how much I spend on cigars. If you are smoking 1-3 cigars a day at $5 to $10.00 a cigar, it adds up quick!

As I’ve said before… Sometimes I just want a simple, decent, relaxing cigar. I don’t see the point in spending a lot of money for those times when I don’t need to be Wowed by a cigar.

Great review on a stick I have had doubts on. I am going to have to try these. Sounds like a great inexpensive smoke! Keep up the great work!

I recieved my first bundle of these this afternoon. I was going to wait till morning with my New Mexico Pinon coffee, but curiosity over took me. I went to my smoking lounge, my car, and lit one up. After a harsh peppery blast to start, the rich nicaraguan tobacco came through. A bit of creamy goodness that came and went to my dismay, then wood, plain tobacco and a slight saltiness. Could have been the dill pickle I had with my turkey sandwich. Nice aroma, which meshed well with the cheap upolstery in my Dodge Neon. The saltiness gave way to a suttle sweetness for the remainder of the smoke. I wondered if it was a fluke since all the reviews boasted creamy all the way through. I couldn’t wait till morning to try another. Back out to the Neon at midnight. This one was rich and creamy all the way, very pleased. Paired with Pinon coffee and no pickle did the trick.

I had been wondering about these cigars so i picked one up the other day at my local shop and i have to say that i was very surprised to how much i liked this cigar…It did have an earthy tone to it as well as a hint of sweetness with a little spice that would linger on the back of my throat and tongue.A couple times i picked up kind of a buttery salty taste in it also….The one i had burned very even…If everyone i smoke holds up like this one did..It will be a very hard smoke to beat for the price.

I am currently smoking one of these right now..I have to say that i am surprised with this cigar. I have smoked a few of these and all of them have been good in construction and have a great burn line. They may not be a flavor power house but they do have a nice flaover to them….As some of you have said they may not be a Wow cigar, but i most defiently wouldn’t turn one down.Especially for the money… a nice solid smoke to me
