Ortez y Turrent–Dos Familias

I picked up today’s review at a local shop recently. I have no extensive information or story about how or why this cigar came to be. So without further ado, I offer you my review of the Ortez y Turrent Dos Familias.

Wrapper: Mexican Criollo

Binder:Nicaragua

Filler: San Andreas Negra & Nicaragua

Size: Robusto 5.25 x 52

Price: Around $6.00

Pre-Smoke & Construction:

The wrapper had minimal flaws, with small to medium veins here and there. The odor from the wrapper was a woody earthiness. The foot had a similar smell, but it was darker or thicker. The cigar solidly packed with consistency. The pre-light draw was good, offering slight resistance. The pre-light flavor was  an interesting sweetness with wood.

The burn required quite a few minor corrections, and the ash held for about an inch.

Flavor:

The first third started off with a flavor I rarely get from a cigar… Saltiness. It wasn’t like I was literally eating salt, but there was definitely a salty note there. Through the nose, I picked up some pepper and spice. Otherwise, wood was the dominant flavor.

The second third lost that salty note. Like before, the dominant flavor was wood. Behind the wood was earthy notes. The peppery spice through the nose didn’t go anywhere. The smoke feel became somewhat thick with a sweet undertone.

What can I say… The last third was pretty much like the second third, minus the sweet creaminess. I was left underwhelmed.

Conclusion:

This was an OK medium bodied cigar. The bad – The last third. The good – the first two thirds were ok. Would I smoke these again? Probably not. There are too many good cigars out there for me to worry about something that is just another regular cigar…

I smoked this same cigar just the other day. Had 8 months on it in the humidor. Like you said, it was OK. Nothing more to add.

Sounds like another boring cigar. Thanks for the review. I need to avoid cigars like this while my budget is taking a beating.

JohnG – Too bad age didn’t help this cigar. It couldn’t hurt to try though!

Sticks – Yea I’ve had a small run on bad cigars it seems. Hopefully I find something a little more worth while for the next review.
