C & C Connecticut

I found the C & C Connecticut while browsing a local cigar shop. I was in the market for a cheap, mild cigar. I often snub the cheapies in the humidor, but every now and then, I figure, “Why not?” At this price point I had little to lose, so I grabbed a few. Is this just another cheapie, or a diamond in the rough? Let’s find out.

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut

Binder: Dominican

Filler: Dominican

Size: Robusto 5 x 50

Price: $3.65

Pre-Smoke & Construction:

A quick visual inspection of the wrapper revealed a nice, shiny appearance. There were some decent sized veins, but nothing that I would consider a flaw. The odor of the wrapper was cedar, with a sweet mild spice. I couldn’t get any smell off of the foot, perhaps a mild earthiness. Overall, the cigar was solidly packed, and had some variances in construction (lumps). The draw had some resistance, and was a little snug. The pre-light flavor was mild and earthy.

The snug draw wasn’t an issue once lit. The burn required no corrections, and the ash held for just around an inch.

Flavor:

The first half had a mild peppery spice on the retrohale. The main flavor was earthiness, subtle nuttiness, and a smooth buttery component. As I approached the end of this half, the strength increased slightly, perhaps to the upper mild region.

The second half took on a thicker, creamier smoke feel. The spice kicked up a notch, but remained easy and mild. Earthiness, along with a nutty note, remained the same. The buttery component remained, but took a back seat towards the end. A mild, spicy tingle lingered on the palate for a little while.

Conclusion:

I know many people don’t care to read reviews of cheap cigars. There is an undeniable market for them, so I’m going to give them a shot from time to time. So… This was a decent milder cigar. It was fairly one dimensional, but with coffee, I enjoyed it much more than the standard water. Burn, construction, and flavor, weren’t bad. It basically is a typical Connecticut wrapped cigar. It pretty much lived up to the price point. If you’re in the market for a cheap, decent Connecticut cigar, this is worth a shot.

Just so you know, I do enjoy the cheap cigar reviews. I have tried the maduro and corojo from c & c, I enjoyed the corojo a little more. I’ve read the secret to these (at least the maduro) is to let them sit for two months in the humidor. I’m usually too impatient for that though.

Brad – Glad you find these little cheap smoke reviews useful. I will have to check out the Corojo and Maduro for safe measure. Reviews will follow I’m sure!

I have found that cheap maduro cigars in general, tend to be my least favorite. Like you, I am too impatient for aging cigars. I want to smoke em!

Totally agree about the cheap maduro’s. Kind of like Starbucks coffee, has a sort of burnt taste to me.

Yeah, who wouldn’t want a decent low priced smoke for those times you don’t want to have to focus all your attention on it? Cheap and good is great, cheap and shitty is, well, shitty, so these reviews are really helpful.

Brad – I’ve always felt that Starbucks overroasts its coffees, making them burnt and bitter, and I’m a Seattleite.

Seattle’s Best #5 is what I drink in the mornings. Might go well with one of the low budget sticks. :)

Thanks for diving into the lower priced cigars Tom. It does matter. Like JJO said, who doesn’t want to find that gem of a low priced cigar.

Brad – I couldn’t have said it better myself. Cheap maduro’s seem to taste overdone. Considering the process involves heat, maybe there is something more to that comment then we realize.

JJO – I can appreciate your point of view, it is similar to mine. I have taken some heat for the cheap cigar reviews, but maybe that crowd has moved on to a higher class blog (hopefully).

Vulture – Thanks for the feedback. It just doesn’t make sense for a “Cigar blog” to snub certain cigars. At least I think so.

About Starbucks… I’ve been saying for years that it just tastes burnt. I still drink it in a pinch though.

I’ll take Dunkin or Seattle’s Best over Starbucks any day.

No problem… heck, I’d like to see more of them. Who knows, you might find a diamond!

Vulture – Noted. I’ll pay more attention to the value section of my local shop. Especially considering this little review seems to be going over well.

Tom and Vulture – Oddly enough, Seattle’s Best is now owned by Starbucks, and has pretty much disappeared here in Seattle. Get the superior competition out of town, I guess. It used to be one of my go-tos when they were independent.

Hey, we’re pretty high-class here. We’re just not snooty elitists. ;)

I have found a few cheapies worth mentioning but have foung they are few and far between. I enjoy the cheaper reviews especially if it’s one the reviewer enjoys. Mainly to find a good, cheap smoke when funds run a bit on the low side. This one sounds like it would be worth a shot. I appreciate the review and as always keep em toasty.

JJO, I noticed that just recently Seattle’s Best changed the look of their packaging. Guess I know why now.
It’s hard to find good grocery store coffee these days.
