Top Cigars of 2012

2012 was a good year. Site wise, traffic reached all time highs, readers have been positive, and a few haters really made it all worth while.

TC6-Hi-Res

You know the routine… All the cigar blogs are posting their top cigars of 2012. Like previous years, I’m far too lazy for that. Below are a few cigars that stood out to me in 2012. Most weren’t even released this year. There are plenty of good cigars that I had the pleasure to smoke, but these just stick out in my mind, at this very moment.

In no particular order:

Drew Estate Liga Privada No. 9 – Due to limited availability in my area, these are a rare treat. It took a cigar bomb from good friends reminded me that the No. 9 is a must try. The T52 is great as well.

Ortega Serie D – Again, a hard smoke for me to find locally. Thanks to the generosity of a kind person, I was able to smoke quite a few of these. A nice treat.

Room 101 One Shot One Kill – This may be my favorite Room 101 blend. Flashy packaging made me want to hate it. But, the end product squashed the angry Asian hate.

Emilio AF1 – I described this cigar as “Damn good,” and I stand by that opinion. Don’t be fooled by the no frills band. This thing is complex, and packed with flavor. It’s all there.

My Father Le Bijou – This is something I smoke at least once a week. Chances are, if it’s a Friday night at Ed’s shop, this is what you’ll see me with. It’s just a great cigar.

Quesada Oktoberfest – For the second year, this has been a go to cigar. It doesn’t have the most complex flavor profile, but flavor delivery is excellent.

Casa Magna Domus Magnus – Another favorite of mine for two years. This cigar packs in flavor and complexities. I have yet to grow tired of it.

And there you have it. Here’s to another year.

It’s been a great year here at Tom’s Cigars! I still need to get a hold of some of these. :p I do hope to see more of Ed in the coming year.

Our tastes/palate are quite similar. Thanks for all the great information and your efforts this year Tom.

Nice list! The Casa Magna is on a lot of lists. Personally, I don’t care for any of the Casa Magna…Love the Liga #9 and Ortega!

I will need to find that Emilio!

P.S. – I still has the OSOK packaging, marketing etc…Room 101 has been all hype for me thus far. This is the one I haven’t smoked yet.

Wizzman – I think coming up with something truly unique is especially hard now. We are in quite a cigar boom, which is a good problem I guess. Glad you enjoy the site.

JJO – Man, you have been coming here for quite a few years. Much appreciated. Yea, gotta stop slacking, and pry Ed from the poker table. Just kidding no I’m not no really I am (not). ;)

JohnG – Dude we should totally hang out. No seriously, next time you’re at Ed’s shop, come right to the lounge. The smoke is on me.

Patrick – True, the Casa is pretty much on any blogger Top Ten for a couple of years now. It’s cool though, if it’s not for you, that’s all that matters. The Liga and Ortega, yea it’s hard to argue with those.
I’d be curious what you think of the OSOK. When I saw it, I was like “Oh God…” But it stood up to my criticism. Although I’m sure it isn’t for everyone.

What shocks me is how many cigars are hard to get “around here.” Isn’t around here…Tampa? Unless you make the 4 hour drive to Miami, I can’t imagine your selection is that poor. (And I know it’s not; I’m just surprised there are cigars by Drew Estate (and others) that are hard to find there).

By contrast, as a Florida (native Miamian and two-time Tampanian (or Tampan?)) ex-pat in the Northeast, yes, it is VERY hard to find good local cigars. Macanudos abound. Umm, hooray? Granted, I can get some RPs at the local smoke shop, but they’re stupidly overpriced.

I’ll just keep ordering online, sadly. :(

That last comment (anonymous) was me, but I am stupid and neglected to fill out my info. ;)

Nice list Tom! I havent had the chance to try 4 out of the 7 LOL.

People complaining about selection really need to come to my area. Just finally got a person in a local shop that is trying to expand lines into more than just the standard fare.

P.S. Get a haircut

jjo December 30th, 2012 at 9:34 pm

Tom, it’s just been a couple of years, but it does seem like forever to us old shits, doesn’t it? ;p You and Mike need to get going and finally give us that joint review.

Tom December 31st, 2012 at 10:11 pm

Roger – Valid point! I’m in St. Petersburg, “Across the bay” as they say. Shops like Tampa Humidor sometimes have those hard to find smokes, but I’m not willing to make the 30-45 minute drive through Tampa for cigars. The traffic makes it not worth the effort. It boils down to laziness and time.

It is unfortunate that, for example, a big shop in Tampa can sometimes get plenty of the Liga No 9, while all shops in St.Pete gets zero love.

Eddie – Hey, it’s a good smoke!

Mike – I really have no complaints. If I can’t find it easily, I just move on. This is a big advantage we have, being in a cigar boom and all. I wish your local guy luck, it is very hard to get any love from some of the cigar companies out there.
Oh, I did get a haircut (sort of). Haven’t you seen my tweets? Wait, nevermind. And read what JJO wrote. Yes, it’s over due!

JJO – I could have sworn I saw you here back in the 60′s, when I started this thing. And we need to pressure Mike. Maybe I’ll just send him cigars and demand a review time?

jjo December 31st, 2012 at 10:34 pm

Tom – Must be all that mescaline going around back then. Lol, Mike never listens to me; he doesn’t even answer my emails. :p

Roger January 2nd, 2013 at 12:21 pm

Ahh, yeah, I always consider the Tampa-St.Pete-Sarasota-Clearwater area to be just one big spot, but the drive over the bridge is a pretty big deal, and Tampa traffic is not to be trifled with. It’s a shame your selection can be so limited when you’re that close to Tampa.

Tom January 5th, 2013 at 11:39 am

JJO – What I don’t know what that means. Yep, that’s my official response!

Roger – Well, if you look at it on a map, everything is literally all right here. So it makes sense. Like I said though, it does boil down to laziness too. Every couple years, I’ll hit the streets of Ybor and go cigar shop hopping. During the day mind you, because at night, holy shit, no chance!

Riley January 24th, 2013 at 1:59 pm

Great post Tom, I like the variety of quality cigars. Here’s to another great year!
